Special Deliveries

Yesterday, I received a slip from the post office that said I had a registered letter. Since I couldn't think of a reason anyone would be sending me a registered letter and there was no zip code or sender name written on the slip, my imagination started working overtime.

Perhaps Nortel Networks was no longer going to administer my 401K. Perhaps the Chicken Soup for the Soul people had finally decided on my story and sent me a contract (I currently have a story which has made the final cut for Chicken Soup for the Dieter's Soul). Was there a bill I forgot to pay? Perhaps my ex-husband was sending me a letter.

I wonder what couldn't be sent
by e-mail

At lunch I stopped by the post office, handed my slip to the clerk and was surprised to see her look of wonder when she returned with my package, which had two large stamps of Trajan Vuia's Flying Car in a shocking shade of yellow. It was a package from Romania.

I laughed and said, "I bet not many people in this post office receive packages from Romania!" She shook her head and said that the stamps were "so colorful".

It turns out it was my copy of Ion Codrescu's haiku journal Hermitage, which contains some haiku and tanka by me, origa, and friends from The Southern California Haiku Study Group, Yuki Teikei Society, and Haiku Society of America. I think I'm the only SFPA member included.

It was my day to receive cool foreign postage stamps in the mail. I also received a letter from Ireland containing three autographed bookplates from Anne McCaffrey that say "To Deborah/Anne McCaffrey". After being disappointed that I wasn't able to see her or obtain an autographed book at WorldCon or at the Borders bookstore in Northridge she visited while she was here, I found out that if you send her an e-mail she'll mail you personally autographed bookplates to put in your Anne McCaffrey books. Click here if you want to find out how to get your own Anne McCaffrey signed bookplates.
