Last Night at the Hollywood Bowl

Last night, I attended a “Mediterranean concert” at the Hollywood Bowl, complete with spectacular fireworks shot off to the music from the 1961 movie, El Cid.

It was a wonderful evening even though linking the musical selections with a Mediterranean theme was a bit sketchy. Basically the first half consisted mostly of movie theme music about movies having to do with countries which bordered the Mediterranean with a bit of Ravel (representing Greece with Daphne and Chloe) thrown in.

For example, the music from The Godfather was supposed to represent Italy.

The second half of the show featured the fado singer Mariza from Portugal (which does not border the Mediterranean). I had never heard of fado before but was quite moved by it. Even though I don’t understand a word of Portuguese, I was moved to tears by her performance and I’m hoping to go to a music store later today and buy one of her cd’s.

For movie buffs, a little perk of attending a concert in Hollywood is that when the orchestra played a medley of music from Casablanca, the actual piano shown in the 1942 movie was brought out on the stage by four huge bodyguards.

And the piano was actually played as part of the medley.

It still has the original strings and hammers from 1942 so it cannot be tuned perfectly without restringing it, but it had a cute vintage sound which added to the piece.
