SF Poetry Reading

Tonight was the long awaited Science Fiction Poetry reading that I did with Kendall Evans in Pasadena. In addition to Kendall and me, three other SFPA poets showed up -- ravenelectrick (with hubby Bob Desharnais in tow, samhenderson (whose hubby very nicely babysat the kids for her), and Denise Dumars who met me for dinner beforehand.

Karen and Bob took some photos of this grand event which she's posted at her website here.

I read from Dwarf Stars and Symphony of the Universe and some other recent poems. After I sat down, the host Don Kingfisher Campbell unexpectedly read one of my poems.

Kendall also read from Dwarf Stars (between the two of us we read about 1/3 of the anthology), some work from his chapbook with David C. Kopaska-Merkel, Separate Destinations, and a wonderful poem from Bare Bone called "The Marionette's Revenge".

Jim and Ursula Gibson from the CFCP, Inc. were also present. Jim's a retired astronomer and read a long poem inspired by Arthur C Clarke's Prelude to Space and his experiences as an astronomer. Ursula read several "moon" poems from her book The Blossoms of the Night-Blooming Cereus inspired by a life of living with an astronomer. samhenderson read two tanka from the most recent Aoife's Kiss and a fantasy poem. Denise Dumars read some horror poems. Other non-sf poets in the audience tried to fit the theme, coming up with poems with hints of sf or astronomy elements. There were about a dozen open mic readers, including Kendall's daughter.

Dan Garcia-Black
ended the reading with a bang, reading an erotic poem using rockets and black holes as images ending with a big bang as he suddenly clapped his hands together loudly. All in all, it made for an enjoyable evening of poetry.
