where koi once swam
shadows of willows

Modern Haiku, Autumn 2009
Our day started with a workshop, a tour of the isolation tanks where some koi are being kept until they can be released into the ponds, and some writing time in the garden. After lunch, the was a performance by Maiko, a women's drum and poetry ensemble, which was followed by readings from the three featured poets, Garry Gay, Jean Hale, and myself.

After the reading, there was a round-robin of haiku, followed by dinner in San Jose's Japantown. My daughter came out from Santa Cruz via the bus for the reading and then we drove
her back, taking in a short tour of Santa Cruz, and a stop by Logos Bookstore, a marvelous used book store with a generous poetry section.
