We had poetry prompts on index cards in three categories - steampunk items or themes (like crinolines or hot air balloons), steampunk era movements (like emancipation or women's suffrage), and 19th Century people and/or fictional characters (like Poe, Captain Nemo, or Jack the Ripper).
I drew "Sherlock Holmes," "snake oil salesman," "occultism," and "dirigible," all of which I managed to use in a single poem. I also wrote a second poem, a cinquain:
above the clouds
and wear steam-powered smiles…
the ring on my finger without
I also drew a card with "Tarzan" but haven't managed to do anything with it yet. Perhaps I can do something on my next trip to the LA County Arboretum where the old Tarzan movies were filmed.
After the workshop, we had a poetry reading. Jules read my poem Darlin' Donna Falls in her best sexy southern voice, a performance I immensely appreciated.
