Glucose Self-Monitoring

Just thought I’d throw in another plug for Ted Kooser’s American Life in Poetry website.

This week’s poem, Glucose Self-Monitoring by Katy Giebenhain is definitely worth the click. It seems that as I grow older, I know more and more people with diabetes.

As an aside, the following lines:

It is every vampire movie ever made.
Hand, my martyr without lips,
my quiet cow.
I’ll milk your fingertips

reminded me of one of my sons' friends from the Boy Scouts who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes in Elementary School. When they used to go backpacking in their teen years, the Scout Master dubbed him Vlad because he was always stabbing himself for blood (to test blood sugar). Everyone in the troop was bestowed a nickname as sort of a badge of honor. One of my sons was Fire Marshall Bill and the other was Pigpen. If you know my sons, you can figure out which is which. If not, well, my lips are sealed to protect the family honor.
