Night Heron

sun on the water
a night heron obscured
by magnolia branches

- Deborah P Kolodji

At the Los Angeles County Arboretum, a few blocks from my home, there is a black-crowned night heron who currently likes to hang out in a Southern Magnolia tree on the shores of Baldwin Lake. I used to be able to find a night heron (an older bird) in the bald cypress across from the Queen Anne House, but I haven't seen him there much lately. However, the bird tends to sit in the magnolia tree in such a way that he's barely visible, so when I saw the prompt for March 2nd, "obscure," the poem just popped out!
