Samuel Menashe, 1925-2011

The latest issue of Modern Haiku arrived in the mail and I was sad to read that Samuel Menashe, the first winner of the Poetry Foundation's "Neglected Masters Award, " died on August 22nd.

Menashe was a true master of short poetry. I reviewed his "New and Selected Poems" for Loch Raven Review in 2007, and a few months later, I was surprised to receive a hand-written thank-you letter from him.

There's a photo of Menashe on inside flap of a book cover, writing one of his short poems in the sand, That photo inspired me to start leaving haiku in sand for the ocean to wash away. Hopefully, this week sometime, I can sneak off to the beach to write a poem in the sand for Menashe.

words of poems
washed out to sea...
I imagine
your name in the tracks
of sanderlings
