Egrets Reading

Ekphrastic Poetry

Today, I attended Monday Night Poetry where I picked up my contributor's copy of the Fall 2007 issue of the San Gabriel Valley Poetry Quarterly.

This issue is a themed issue on "Art" and contains my ekphrastic poem, "The Portal of Rouen Cathedral," another of the windfall poems derived from the Southland Poets of the Fantastic workshop at the Getty.

kathleenwilson won the $50 prize for best of issue (which she kindly donated back to the journal). Kath's poem was inspired by the Jawlensky exhibit which closed today at the Norton Simon Museum.

Here's my poem from the issue:

The Portal of Rouen Cathedral*

day emerges from night shadows
clinging to cathedral stone

whispering shapes of doubt
cloud First Communion faith
but he watches the sun rise

prisms of light
reveal hand-carved prayers
begging admiration
like a widow's alms

each cornice
rising, always rising
into the pink blush
of heaven
