Egrets Reading

Violet Kazue de Cristoforo, R.I.P.

I just heard that Violet Kazue de Cristoforo died on Wednesday. I became familiar with Cristoforo's work through California Poetry, an anthology of California poets edited by Dana Gioia in 2004.

She wrote, collected, and translated haiku from the Japanese internment camps during World War II, publishing them in May Sky: There Is Always Tomorrow in 1997.

She also wrote an earlier book Poetic Reflections of the Tule Lake Internment Camp, 1944 , which was published in 1987 but I have not seen a copy of that.

She was a guest at the Yuki Teikei Society Asilomar haiku retreat one year. I wish I could have been there.

There is a detailed obituary of her life here.
