Egrets Reading

Bicyling the Country

Pasadena poet Sharon Hawley recently returned from a 120 day bicycle trip across the country. In May, she dissembled her bicycle, packed the pieces in to two boxes, packed everything else she thought she'd need (including an old laptop) into carry-on baggage, and then flew herself one-way to Virginia.

After reassembling the bicycle (She lost me right there--I'm 100% certain that no bike I'd ever screw together would get me over the Rocky Mountains!), she dipped a wheel in the Atlantic Ocean and started peddling west, avoiding all major roads and highways and cities, eventually dipping a wheel in the Pacific Ocean.

She tells me that Kentucky has the friendliest people and the meanest dogs, and that Nevada was a very lonely place. She replaced her tires half way, but only had one flat during the entire trip.
