Speaking of sonnets, here's one of mine that I read at the 2006 World Con poetry reading:

The Last of the Lost

His head swirls with lush memories of earth
of forgotten bird species and their songs
echoing through space years, far from his birth
in that snowy place where his heart belongs.
Colder than Wisconsin winters in space,
alone in a starless void as supplies
run low with nowhere to restock no place
to go but oblivion. A bird cries
in his mind, a Common Loon's haunting call
transforming his starship, a space canoe
paddling through the night waters of all
his last thoughts, sky images shifting blue
as he greets a new day, another zone--
the shell of his body sails on alone.
