Egrets Reading

Poem at Strange Horizons

My poem Casting Her Lot is now online at Strange Horizons.

This is another poem which was inspired by a line from the Bard - this time from Hamlet. I had received an e-mail last December with the quote from Hamlet, Act 1, Scene i which is often used as a Christmas poem:

Some say that ever 'gainst that season comes
Wherein our Saviour's birth is celebrated,
The bird of dawning singeth all night long:
And then, they say, no spirit dares stir abroad;
The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike,
No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm,
So hallow'd and so gracious is the time.

- William Shakespeare

Somehow, the one line:

The nights are wholesome—then no planets strike just jumped out at me and I began to see this woman on the planet battered by asteroids....

It's amazing the journey an imagination can take you.
