Scifaiku Jammin' in San Diego
Last night, we had a scifaiku jam at Rebecca's Cafe in San Diego, CA. This was the "feature" at SFPA member Terrie Leigh Relf's bi-monthly "off-beat open mic" reading which happens on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month.
It was a blast.
I started off the feature by doing a little sales pitch on the SFPA, told them about my free flyers, read Tom Brinck's scifaiku from the "What is Scifaiku?" flyer, and read samhenderson's poem, "Hero," from "Dragon Lust."
I then kicked off the scifaiku jam by reading "From the Oort Cloud," from Mythic Delirium in two voices with Billie Dee. "From the Oort Cloud" is a science fiction renku I wrote with Andrea Gradidge (ushi), Lloyd Daub (oino sakai), Mary Margaret Serpento, and Teri Santitoro. I would love to do this some time with five voices, but we only had one mic and four people (although I suppose I could have recruited one person from the audience).
Billie Dee and Debbie Kolodji read "From the Oort Cloud"
Then, the four scifaiku jam participants (me, Terrie, Billie, and Scott Virtes) took turns passing the mic and reading 3 scifaiku at a shot. As the audience reacted to the funny ones, the ones about weird alien sex, etc, we all started selecting even more funny, off-the-wall ku as part of our 3-ku sets.
It was the most fun I think I've ever had at a microphone.
After the feature, there was still a little time, so the four of us also got up and read some of our other (mostly speculative) poems. Some of the audience was inspired by the theme, several people got up and read science fiction type poems - one even got up and read a scifaiku.
Wish you all could have been there.
