Egrets Reading

Sunday morning reflection

the night heron
among scavenging ducks
winter peace

Yesterday morning I spent about an hour walking around The Los Angeles Arboretum and found myself contemplating a black crowned night heron which stood like a statue among a cacophony of ducks that this photo doesn't even come close to capturing. I was sitting on a tree stump when I took the photo as ducks surrounded me, quacking away, sometimes coming too close for my comfort. To my left a family with two school age kids was feeding the ducks, to my right, a photographer was snapping photos. I just sat there for awhile and stared at the heron which managed to be very still and quiet in the midst of chaos.

The Arboretum is like that. A sanctuary of quiet reflection in the middle of a busy city.
