Egrets Reading

Excursion to Kinokuniya

Today tanka poet and photographer An Xiao, my son Sean and I went to the Kinokuniya Bookstore in Little Tokyo where I mentally bought about $200 of haiku and tanka books. Fortunately for my January budget, I decided to limit my purchase to just one book. I eventually chose Modern Japanese Tanka, edited by Makoto Ueda, and plan to spend most of the evening curled up with it.

We also took in the Japanese Garden in the Otani Hotel and the James Irvine Japanese Garden in the Japanese American Cultural Center, but I was a bit disappointed. I this is in part because I've spent so much time at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at Long Beach State, an unfair comparison because it is by design on a much greater scale.

Yet, it was also because both of the smaller gardens lacked koi. However, as a brief refuge from the city, they filled the spot.

I also finally saw the monument to haiku and tanka in the Japanese Village Plaza.
