Egrets Reading

A City’s Unknown Landmarks

Today I passed the Korean Friendship Bell on the way to the haiku gathering at Pt Fermin Park in San Pedro and decided to stop by and take a look.

This 17 ton bell in its pagoda structure was a gift to Los Angeles by the people of South Korea as part of the bicentennial celebration in 1976.

The brochure says thirty craftsmen were flown in from Korea to construct the pagoda-like stone structure which took 10 months to complete. It seems sad that after all this effort, virtually no one in Los Angeles has ever heard of, let alone seen this “friendship bell.”
