Descanso Gardens Haiku meeting tomorrow

On Saturday, May 20th, instead of meeting in the food court outside the Cerritos Borders bookstore, the Southern California Haiku Study Group going to have a kukai at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge.

We will meet from 2:00 to 4:00 in the picnic area to the right of
the main entrance to the gardens. It is free to park and there is
no charge for entering the picnic area.

For those interested in a pre-meeting gathering, I've made tea
reservations with Full Moon House at 1:00 pm. which has just started
offering a full tea service. Tea is $16.50 for the full service
which includes a pot of tea, miso soup, California roll, shrimp,
teriyaki chicken finger sandwich, and deserts. For those who do not
want the full tea service, a pot of tea is $5.00 and there is an a
la carte menu. They are planning to seat us in the patio near the
Minka House in the Japanese Garden.

If you'd like to come early and stroll the garden with your haiku
notebook and/or sketch book, the gardens open at 9:00 am. Admission
is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and is free for members of
reciprocal gardens (Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at CSULB, The
Japanese Garden (Van Nuys), Los Angeles County Arboretum, South
Coast Botanical Garden).

Parts of "Memoirs of a Geisha" were filmed at Descanso Gardens. In
addition to the small Japanese garden, there is a lilac garden, a
rose garden, a camellia forest, a California garden, and a small
lake. There is also a nice gift shop and a cafe. The Monrovia
African Violet Society is having a show in Van de Kamp hall, which
is also inside the gardens.

So, if you're in the area and want to write haiku with us, stop on by!
