Egrets Reading

A good meeting place?

Does anyone have any ideas where a haiku study group could meet on a monthly basis?

For the past 15 years, the California Haiku Study Group has met in a bookstore. Unfortunately, the Borders Bookstore in Cerritos has moved to a new location a block away and the new location is smaller, with no room between the aisles to set up a table and chairs like they did for us at the other store.

I checked into meeting rooms at libraries but there are costs involved that are hard to overcome. For example, the LA County libraries have meeting rooms for organizations which are free if the event is open to the public, but they want the group to have liability insurance. The cost of liability insurance would mean we would need to charge our core group of 12 about $5 each for every meeting. That's just not going to work for us.

Even though we have a "name" for our group, we're not really an official organization - since there's no dues, no money changing hands at all, no officers, etc. We're just a group of mostly HSA members who like to meet once a month for a haiku workshop.

I'm not sure a coffeehouse would work because we're not really "performing," we're sitting in a circle discussing...which would just take up table space, with probably not that much in the way of sales for the coffeehouse.

A park would be nice, but what if it actually rains or something? And, even though the winters are mild here, I'm not sure a January meeting on a park bench would really work...

I'm not sure any of us wants the burden of having it in our house every month, so I'm running out of ideas.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!!
