Egrets Reading

The Planets

I’m currently reading The Planets by Dava Sobel, which is turning out to be a fascinating read. My son, Seán, gave it to me for Christmas, inscribing it with his wish that it would inspire me to write galaxies of Rhysling-nominated short poems.

I don’t know if it will inspire any Rhysling nominations (I haven’t actually been nominated since 1996, which is fine because I think I’m orbiting in a slightly different plane from the rest of the SFPA), but the book has certainly opened my eyes to a few things.

Did you know that the equatorial regions of the sun orbit faster than the polar regions?
Before I started reading this book, I didn’t.
