Egrets Reading

A Million Poets

A friend gave me this link to an article about poetry in China:

Sun Yiqing, the president of the China Poets Society, was quoted as saying “There are at least one million poets across China.”

But, how many poetry READERS are there in China? The article never asks this question, let alone answers it.

Readership, in my opinion, is the major problem facing poetry in America, because here there are actually more people writing poetry than there are reading it. This opens up other questions, the most important being:

How can you write poetry if you don’t read it?

Why don’t people read poetry?

I wish I knew how many people read poetry in China. Perhaps I need to learn to write in Mandarin.
