November Kukai / Scifaiku challenge

I’d like to remind my friends who enjoy haiku that the deadline for the current kukai at Haikuworld.org is this Saturday at noon EST. Entries should be sent to st-kukai@haikuworld.org with a topic of “Kigo entry” or “Free Format entry”. The topics are:

Kigo – autumn wind
Free format – friendship

If you’ve never participated in a kukai, the way this works is that the haiku entries are sent to the kukai secretaries at the above address. The secretaries compile the entries, strip off the names, and send two voting e-mails containing all of the haiku to all participants of either kukai. (You only have to enter one to vote on both!) After the votes are received, the kukai secretaries tally the results and send out two kukai results e-mails to all participants with the authors identified.

In the kigo section, the phrase “autumn wind” should be used seasonally in the haiku. In other words, it is used as the “kigo” to create the setting. In the free format section, the word “friendship” can be used anywhere in the haiku.

For more information, check out the kukai site: http://www.haikuworld.org/kukai/

For those who’d rather write scifaiku than haiku, I’d like to challenge you to write a sf/f/h version using these words and post it here in the comments to this blog entry. Please remember, if you’re planning to enter the kukai, you’re better off writing mainstream haiku. Don’t post anything here that you are planning to actually enter in the kukai. I just thought it would be fun to try to write scifaiku on these topics to get a sense of the connection between the composition of scifaiku versus the writing of mainstream haiku.

To start things off, here are my scifaiku on the kukai topics:

autumn wind
the loss of solar power draw
at Gusev Crater

relishing the backrubs
from its tentacles
friendship
