The power of "no"

In the last few days, I've received more some poems back with the dreaded, "close but not quite" note from the editors of Modern Haiku and Lone Star Stories.

The word "no" can be overwhelming when it is directed at you - it can echo the doubts in your mind about your own self-worth.

But only if you let it. Just like they always tell the child who falls down when trying to ride a bicycle to get up immediately and try again, I think it's important to submit something to someplace when poems come back. It doesn't have to be the same set of poems and perhaps it is better if it's not.

So, I responded to these rejections by submitting completely different poems to Strange Horizons and Chizine. And, if they come back, I'll send something to Frogpond or something.

Anything to avoid the echoing of "no"......

silent rocks
in the empty creek bed
her "no" echoing
