This of course is the same newspaper rumored to be cutting its decades' old Sunday book review section next month due to budget cuts. The book review section is 12 pages of 1/2 page size.
Apparently the readers of L.A. would rather read about fashion than books.
Instead of being enticed into purchasing Hades by Russell Andrews by one of two paid ads in the Book Review Section, I guess I need to think about buying a $19.99 Sonia Kashuk make-up brush (the full page color advertisement at the back of the new Image section for Target).
This is what it's really all about, isn't it? Today's book review section has two black and white 1/2 page 2-column ads. One ad is from Hachette Book Group USA/Warner Books and one is from Vintage Books. There is also a third ad, a small one inch, one column ad from a Ghostwriter Service.
The new fashion section, by comparison is filled with ads, many in color....the advertisers are Louis Vuitton, Gearys Beverly Hills, Mikimoto, David Yurman, Van Clef & Arpels, Judith Ripka, Ralph Lauren (full page color),Chloe, Montblanc (full page color), Mercedes Benz, Gap (two page full page color),Celine, Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, Abundance, Dickes and Dickes, Jolie Designs, SN Queens Jewelry, Diamond Jewelry Gallery, Modern Design Inc., Xfit Lycra, (full page color), Moet & Chandon Champagne (full page color), and Target (full page color).
So, in addition to writing, calling, and faxing the Los Angeles Times, I think the book lovers of Los Angeles should consider doing the following:
1. Write Target and ask them why they don't take out color ads in the book review section (since they do sell books and sponsor a stage at the book fair). I'm more apt to buy a book from Target than a makeup brush. (Also, don't Mercedes Benz owners read books?)
2. Buy a copy of Hades and write Warner Books that you bought it because of their ad in the book review section, a section that you won't be able to read in the Sunday paper any more if the rumors are true.
