Woolly Mammoth Hair

Today, I went to Santa Barbara with my parents. Plan A was to create my January 13th Sierra Club outing to the monarch overwintering site and the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens. After I had described my day to them, they were anxious to see the butterflies for themselves.

However, by the time we got to Ventura it was raining. By Carpenteria, it was pouring. Once we arrived in Goleta, we looked at the weather and had lunch. After all, this is Southern California. It doesn't rain here. Surely it would clear up after lunch.

However, it kept raining. So I invoked Plan B and we visited the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History instead. I had never been there before and we all enjoyed looking at the pygmy woolly mammoth skeletons which were found on the Channel Islands and watching the planetarium show. One of the highlights for me was the sample of actual woolly mammoth hair from a frozen adult woolly mammoth carcass found in Siberia in 1997. The museum claims this is the only actual sample of woolly mammoth hair on display in North America.

The photo was taken at a slight angle because of the way the display cases were arranged.
